The Fulbright Program in Thailand is a bi-national program for academic exchanges between Thailand and the United States.
What disciplines are eligible for the Open Competition Program?
All disciplines except for health science and related areas which require more than two years to complete.
Can I apply for the Open Competition Program if I already have a masterís degree?
Yes, but grant consideration will be made on the academic record of your bachelorís degree though a transcript for your masterís degree is required.
Can I apply for a Ph.D. program that includes a masterís degree?
Yes, but Fulbright will provide grant only for a masterís degree.
Does the grant cover only the first year of study? How about the second year?
The grant covers the first year and can possibly cover the second year, but on a case by case basis. The grant amount given in the second year is normally half of the first year. In the second year, therefore, students are encouraged to seek funding from other sources.
Can I apply for a program with more than a two-year requirement?
Yes, but you are responsible for the additional expenses.
Is it acceptable if my GPA is in percentage?
You need to request another one from your home institution.
What kind of commitment does the Fulbright Program require?
The Fulbright Program provides grants with no string attached. However, Fulbright grantees are holders of J-1 visa and are therefore subjected to a two-year residency requirement, meaning they are not allowed to work in the U.S. for 2 years after the visa expires. You are also advised to check with your home institution for any further commitments.
Can I apply to study a discipline different from my undergraduate?
Yes but with good reasons.
How many disciplines can I apply for?
Is it acceptable if I have a TOEFL score report of 79?
No. The minimum requirement for TOEFL is 213 (computer-based) or 80 (iBT). Fulbright grantees who wish to have a higher score will receive a voucher for another TOEFL test.
Can I use my IELTS score?
No. The Fulbright Program only accepts TOEFL score reports.
Do I need GRE and GMAT score reports?
Not for the grant application but for university application. Grantees will receive a voucher for (another) GRE and GMAT tests
My CGPA is 2.99. Can I apply for the Fulbright Program? Will other qualifications (e.g. extra-curricular activities) help?
No. The minimum CGPA requirement is at least 3
If my CGPA at the undergraduate level is under 3, but my CGPA for a masterís/doctoral degree is 3 or above, can I apply?
No. The grant is for a master program so consideration will be made based on your undergraduate record.
If I graduated from a master program abroad/an international program, do I still need to submit a TOEFL score report?
Yes. It is a universal requirement for non-American applications.
Do I need an acceptance from a host university before submitting the grant application? Do I need to apply to a university before submitting the grant application?
Not necessary. University applications can be done after you are selected as a Fulbright grantee. Those who are already accepted need to defer their study for the following academic year.
Are there any previous exams available for sale? Any samples for interview questions?
No. There is no exam for the Fulbright Program. The interview questions also vary from year to year depending on the committee panel, which also changes on a yearly basis.
Do I need an official transcript? Can I download an online transcript from the universityís website?
For initial application submission, you can print out the online transcript with completed GPA record or with accompanying letter from the institution certifying that you will graduate that semester. However, an official transcript is needed and must be submitted by May.
Can I submit the same application I had submitted for last yearís competition?
Not recommended as there might be some changes of details
If I am not selected for the grant, can I have my application back?
Yes, but you must make a request within 5 months after the announcement of grant results. The application can be picked up at Fulbright Thailandís office or mailed at your own cost.
