English Teaching Assistantship Program (ETA)


The Program places young Americans in Thai middle/high schools out of Bangkok as English conversation teachers for 12 months (including a four-week orientation in Bangkok).

All 20 grantees are required to begin their grants in October in order to attend the orientation program. The orientation program covers intensive Thai language study, ESL teaching techniques, and Thai cultural issues. The assistantship requires grantees to start from the second semester and proceed to the first semester of the subsequent academic year. During Thai summer school vacation, grantees are expected to be engaged in English camps, outreach or other related community activities.


Announcement will be made through the Institute of International Education (IIE)


1. Be an American citizen in good health under 30 years of age
2. Be well-rounded, mature, and articulate graduating seniors and recent graduate who are unmarried and without dependents
3. Be willing to experience challenges of living in a less comfortable setting
4. Be willing to get intensive cultural experience and different education environment
4. Previous teaching experience and knowledge of Thai are not required
