Networking: Starting with Learning about Context and Culture

The impacts of globalization are far greater for one single country to be a ‘stand-alone’. People-to-people networks have become increasingly important as one of the avenues for the borderless world and blurred country’s borderlines. The new realities of globalization and their implications have permeated into the higher education sector both domestically and globally.

To ensure fruitful networking, in addition to the appropriate approaches employed and consistent deployment, the baseline is the understanding of context and culture of partners who have formed respective networks.

Effective networking is not for one-sided transfer of resources and technical know-how. Rather, it needs to stress on mutual learning and sharing of experiences throughout the process of cooperation. Before then, learning more of each other’s stages of development, needs and thinking patterns would help pave a more solid network that will be sustainable in the longer run. An example of Asean University Network (AUN) will be given.

Success of the networking is when we accumulate our knowledge, experiences and skills about contexts and cultures of partners involved, to the extent that we are able to move forward and sustain it. Joint learning efforts have to be made consistently. Thus, it is vital for all to look and learn within the region, building up a ‘regional comfort zone’ where we can be ourselves at best, where we are allowed to identify best practices of how networking is made effective, and where friendship is formed from firmer foundation of mutual understanding.
