By Vichaya Mukdamanee, 2008 Open Competition Program at Pratt Institute, New York
During his Fulbright grant to study for a Masters degree at Pratt Institute, New York, Vichaya Mukdamanee was asked by TUSEF to design a Caring Leader Across cultures plaque, which would be presented to Princess Sirindhorn on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Thailand. While the request had undoubtedly brought him delight, he realized then that it would be a very rare yet challenging opportunity in life. The heaps of pressure to work on the design were not just to meet everyones high expectations, but also to make sure that the plaque signified the intention of the Award and its meaning. It was equally important that it reflect Princess Sirindhorns multifaceted duties.
After spending several days putting together his concept, Vichaya finally decided to use water drop and birds nest to symbolize the significance of the Princesss duties. The Award, which was sculpted and casted by a young sculptor, Khun Chaiwat Kudapan, is made in the shape of a clear water drop, symbolizing the Princess grace toward Thai people and the Thai Kingdom. The stand was made from silver-like metal silver in the shape of birds nest embracing the water drop. The whole plaque reflects the feeling of support, tenderness and delicacy mirroring the concept of caring, which is the theme word of the event.
Apart from designing the award, Vichaya was also very proud to be the person who carried the Award to Ms. Alina Romanowski, Deputy Assistant Secretary from the U.S. Department of State, who presented it to the Princess on the celebration day. As an artist, Vichaya was so grateful to Fulbright as this opportunity made him fulfilled his dream!
